WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In a game of seemingly countless scoring chances, the Whitman College men's soccer team knocked on the door time and again but never found the back of the net in a scoreless draw to Whitworth in Northwest Conference action on Wednesday night at Hayner Field.
Keepers Bernie Jones from Whitman and the Whitworth combination of Aidan Chase and Anton Dershem each posted five saves. Jones may have made the save of the game, coming up big on a breakaway to deny Cole Friesen with one second left on the clock.
The game featured end to end action as both teams asserted their dominance at different stages. Early on it were McCoy Hennes and Sawyer Valero who nearly scored for the Blues. Hennes missed on a pair of headers off corner kicks, and Valero couldn't quite get the look he needed in receiving services to the far post.
The Blues had numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game, but none greater than a pair of repeated shots and saves midway through the second half. Aiden turned away a point-blank shot from Fernando Lopez-Vega and did the same seconds later to Velero.
In the end, a combined 26 shots by both teams, 10 on goal, proved not to be enough to see a goal and the Battle of the Whits ended goalless.
Whitman closes out the week with a Saturday, Oct. 21 match at Pacific. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
