Women's Soccer Hangs On For 3-2 Win Over Willamette

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's soccer team scored goals early in each half and hung on for a 3-2 victory over Willamette in Northwest Conference on Saturday at Hayner Field.

"That was an excellent performance today," said coach Michelle Voiland. "The mentality was spot on and we were a force to be reckoned with from the first whistle. I loved seeing Molly hit that banger of a shot in the second minute to put us up early. I was happy we could get some players minutes as well. Everyone worked hard to make sure we got the three points. Now we focus on Senior Day tomorrow and bringing the determination and drive one more time on Hayner Field."

The Blues (8-5-4, 7-4-2 NWC) dominated possession, particularly in the early part of the second half leading to a goal and a 2-0 lead. Hannah Hagler had command of her area and posted two saves before Emily Badgley subbed in for her in the 72nd minute. Whitman added another but the Bearcats responded with two goals in the final 20 minutes, leading to some tense moments before time expired.

Molly Beaulieu opened the scoring with the game not even two minutes old. She won the ball well outside the penalty area and rifled a shot to the far post that beat Bearcat keeper Siera Edwards.

The Blues held the lionshare of the possession for the remainder of the first half, and dominated the opening 10 minutes of the second half. The pressure on Willamette's goal paid dividends right away as Virginia Hunt scored under a minute after the second half kickoff and put her team up 2-0.

Whitman seemingly sealed the win when Chaney Heinbaugh scored on a penalty kick in the 68th minute. She earned the spot kick after getting tripped up on the baseline attempting to serve a cross.

The Bearcats put the result more than in question with goals in the 79th and 82nd minutes. Badgley was unable to hold on to a shot which was followed up and scored by Ella Abraham. Just over two minutes later, Abraham served a ball into the penalty area that was directed into the far post by Sophie Cleland.

Willamette had several late opportunities to tie the game, but the Whitman defense held strong and preserved the win.

The Blues will play their home finale on Sunday, Oct. 29 and will honor their seniors with a special ceremony prior to kickoff.
