WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's soccer team showcased four different goal scorers, three goals coming in the final 13 minutes to post its largest margin of victory of the season, a 4-0 rout of George Fox on Saturday afternoon at Hayner Field.
Edwin kicked off the scoring in the 20th minute for the Blues (4-5-2, 4-2-1 NWC) who outshot the Bruins 18-6. Romero's goal midway through the first half held up for quite some time as a one-goal victory looked to be in the cards. The flood gates would later open however.
In the 78th minute, Pablo Gonzalez, Jr. scored off a corner kick to give his team some insurance. Lucas McAllister ripped a shot that was saved for a corner by Bruin keeper Keoni Gavino. The Blues were denied on several shot attempts following the corner before Gonzalez, Jr. fired a shot through the crowd low and inside the far post.
Fernando Lopez-Vega added to the lead with a goal just over two minutes later. Resulting from another corner kick, George Fox cleared the ball but not far enough as Lopez-Vega one-timed his shot from just outside the penalty for a pretty goal.
Not to be outdone, Christian Gomez capped the afternoon with a delightful goal of his own. Riki Kobayashi found him with a short central pass. Gomez collected it, took a touch and delivered a strike just under the crossbar by Gavino's outstretched arm.
Bernie Jones recorded the shutout for the Blues, posting four saves in the process.
The Blues are back at it on Sunday against Lewis & Clark. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
