Baker Drops Career High 30 Points, Blues Top Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. - Korin Baker poured in a career-high 30 points to go along with nine rebounds and the Whitman College women's basketball team remained undefeated with a 74-53 win at Northwest University on Friday night.

Baker was the focal point of the Whitman offense and a clear thorn in the side of the Eagles. She hit 10-24 shots and dropped 10-14 from the free throw line. She also chipped in two blocks and three steals. Carly Martin added 16 points and dished out a team-high five assists.

Kyrin Baklund scored a team-high nine points for the Eagles with Alli VanKooten adding eight points and eight rebounds. Katie Fleming chipped in seven points and handed out a game-high six assists.

Whitman (3-0) fed Baker early and often. She hit her first four shots and, along with a Martin three pointer, helped the Blues to a 12-9 lead just over the midway point of the first quarter. Northwest was Whitman's equal in the opening 10 minutes, however, and led by as many as four points before exiting the period up two.

Quarters two and three belonged to the Blues as they outscored Northwest 40-19 over that stretch. Shooting it similarly to the Eagles, the Blues made up for it by forcing their opponent into 25 turnovers leading to 18 second-chance points. Kylie Lunday's bucket put Northwest up six points midway through the second quarter, but an 11-2 Whitman run ensued. The final three possessions all resulted in Baker buckets who helped her team to a seven-point halftime lead.

Whitman quickly pushed the lead to double digits in the third quarter and later extended to a 14-point lead after a Martin three pointer. Christiane Carlisle nailed a triple inside of a minute remaining to make it a 55-36 score and the Blues closed it out in the fourth quarter.

Whitman plays it second of a back-to-back on Saturday, visiting The Evergreen State College for a 3:00 p.m. tipoff.
