Women's Basketball Edges Evergreen State College

KIRKLAND, Wash. - Carly Martin led three players in double figure scoring with 15 points, guiding the No. 24 Whitman College women's basketball team to a narrow 58-54 win over The Evergreen State College on Saturday afternoon.

Lindsey Drango added 10 points and six rebounds and Jordan Leith chipped in 10 points off the bench for the Blues who did not score their first points until Martin's three pointer with 3:41 to play in the first quarter. Natalie Lundberg grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with six points and five steals.

Scoring was at an absolute premium in the opening quarter with only nine combined points by both teams. The game began to open up in the second quarter however. In the early going it were the Blues (4-0) who pushed the lead to 10 points as Martin hit a three ball and Christiane Carlisle nailed two more as part of a 9-0 run to put Whitman up 16-6 with 5:42 to play.

The Geoducks responded with a run of their own to tie the game. Making their living at the line coupled by a pair of baskets from Jenna Glenzel evened the game at 18-18 with 2:04 to play. Martin and Leith hit from the floor inside of a minute to play as Whitman carried a 22-20 lead into halftime.

The third quarter saw both teams heat up from the floor as well as multiple lead changes. Mikail Montez hit from the floor to give Evergreen the lead early, but Martin and Drango responded with buckets to regain the lead for the Blues. Madison Hagen then got hot for the Ducks, hitting a pair of three pointers to put her team up 34-31 with 3:53 to play.

Whitman never trailed in what was a tight and tense fourth quarter. Drango's jumper broke a 43-43 tie with 6:22 to play in the game but buckets from Montez and Abby Mundy kept Whitman's lead at a single point with 4:29 remaining. Late in the game, Martin's three pointer and a pair of made Lundberg free throws gave the Blues a little breathing room at 52-47 with 1:39 to play. Sydney Van Ness quickly erased that cushion, draining a pair of three pointers to even the game at 54-54 with 27 seconds remaining. Baker responded with a jumper and Whitman locked in defensively on Evergreen's final possession.

The Blues will have nearly two weeks off before retaking the court for their Northwest Conference opener. They host Pacific on Friday, Dec. 1 and Willamette on Saturday, Dec. 2.
