No. 18 Women's Basketball Tops Pacific In NWC Opener

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Carly Martin delivered a career-high 24 points on 10-16 shooting, Christiane Carlisle chipped in 17 more and the No. 18 Whitman College women's basketball team took down Pacific 61-53 on Friday night in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams.

The matchup pitted last season's top two NWC teams with the Blues edging the Boxers in the tournament title game. Korin Baker added six points in tonight's win with a game-high 12 rebounds for Whitman (5-0, 1-0 NWC) who, with a 46% field goal percentage, shot it significantly better than Pacific from the floor.

Brilie Kovaloff and Alexis Intong led the Boxers (3-3, 0-1 NWC), scoring 12 and 10 points respectively.

The early moments saw a tight contest with Baker scoring in the post and Carlisle dialing long distance to put Whitman up 7-6 with 5:11 to play. The Blues then began to heat up as Martin, Emmie Ogden and Jordan Leith all hit from the floor, helping their team to a 14-8 lead with two minutes to play. Late in the quarter, Danica Schmidt nailed a three ball for the Boxers to limit Whitman's lead to 14-11 by quarter's end.

The second quarter saw the Blues extend their lead to double digits spearheaded by a 7-0 period-opening run. Baker scored on a layup and Martin capped the run with a three pointer to lift the Blues to a 21-11 lead less than two minutes in. Rilee Price's three pointer halted the run but Carlisle answered right back with a triple of her own. The lead swelled to 13 points but the Boxers managed to shave it down to seven after Marissa Layosa got her jumper to go. Baker came up with a block on the final possession as Whitman took a 30-23 lead into the break.

The teams emerged from the locker rooms to witness an early Carlisle shooting display. Kovaloff's bucket cut the lead to five points, but Carlisle responded with a three pointer to push the lead back up. She later nailed back-to-back triples to keep the Boxers at bay who were making every effort to work back into the game, but instead trailed by nine with 6:46 to play. The lead hovered around double digits for the remainder of the quarter before the Blues took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter showcased composure by the Blues who withstood every threat posed by the Boxers. Intong drained a three pointer to cut the lead to single digits but Martin nailed her own from beyond the arc to keep the lead at 11 points. Inside of five minutes, Kovaloff hit a three pointer but again Martin was there for a timely response, scoring to maintain an eight-point lead and help the Blues pull away for the win.

The Blues close their NWC opening weekend on Saturday against Willamette. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 4:00 p.m.
