Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 18 Women's Basketball Upended By Willamette

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Carly Martin led all scorers with 23 points, Korin Baker posted a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the No. 18 Whitman College women's basketball team fell 66-61 to Willamette in Northwest Conference action on Saturday at the Sherwood Center.

Martin added nine boards and five assists to her impressive line and Lindsey Drango chipped in 17 points and six rebounds before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.

Carolyn Ho and Elyse Waldal led the Bearcats with 19 points and 18 points, respectively. Willamette shot it significantly better, particularly from deep, nearly doubling up the Blues (5-1, 1-1 NWC) in three-point field percentage.

The Blues held the lead through one quarter, hitting a solid 50% from the field helping them to a 17-11 lead by the end of the period. Martin got things going for the Blues with the game's opening hoop, then Drango hit back-to-back buckets to put Whitman up 8-6 at the midway point of the quarter. The Blues caught fire down the stretch as Martin and Drango both hit from the floor before Jordan Leith nailed a three pointer.

In a tail of two quarters, the Blues only mustered four points in the second 10 minutes. They shot only 2-19 from the field while the Bearcats maintained their play and carried a 25-21 lead at the break. Ho capped the half with a three pointer and sent Willamette to the break up four points.

Both teams picked up the pace in the second half, particular in what became a nail biting fourth quarter. Whitman trailed by four points but regained the lead after Drango and Martin got their jumpers to go. Neither team led by more than a bucket until Martin nailed a three pointer with 3:21 to play to put the Blues up 55-52. Whitman had a tough time finding the hoop from there on out and quickly found itself trailing 62-57 with 1:12 to play.

The Blues return to action next weekend, hosting the WHIT Classic with games against Schreiner and Colorado College.
