Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 23 Women's Basketball Cruises Past Schreiner

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Carly Martin scored a game-high 23 points and led the No. 23 Whitman College women's basketball team to a historic shooting night in a 90-44 win over Schreiner at the WHIT Classic on Friday night at the Sherwood Center.

Martin broke her own career mark with seven three pointers and now ranks second all-time in three pointers made in a single game. As a team, Whitman (6-1) drained 14 three pointers, a feat not seen in over a decade. Briana Andrade added 16 points and Korin Baker chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.

Nariyah Buggs led the Mountaineer effort with 11 points and Demauria Miles posted six points and a team-high six rebounds.

To say the Blues were hot out of the gates would be a gross understatement. Christiane Carlisle drained an early three pointer off of a steal, then Martin nailed elbow triples on back-to-back possessions to put Whitman up 15-2 with 6:23 remaining in the opening quarter.

The run continued as Baker scored on a jumper and Carlisle nailed her second three pointer to lift the Blues to a 21-point lead midway through the period. The advantage swelled to 25 points after another Martin three pointer as the Blues continued to pour it on. Only Buggs' six first-quarter points prevented the game from getting completely out of hand, but it were still the Blues who carried a 33-10 lead into the second quarter.

The Mountaineer offense finally got on track in the second quarter, but that did little to stop Whitman's scoring onslaught. Brie Sosa drained a three pointer early, then Skye Thomas added another to cut the lead to under 20 points early in the period. Unfortunately for Schreiner (6-1), Whitman continued to fire on all cylinders. Andrade nailed consecutive three pointers to inflate the lead to 29 points with just over two minutes to play. Carlisle capped the half with yet another three pointer and the Blues carried a 54-24 lead into halftime.

The Blues continued to cruise in what turned out to be an elementary second half. The lead swelled to over 40 points on several occasions and the Blues emptied their bench early before closing out the win.

With Colorado College convincingly defeating Whitworth in the opening game of the Classic, Saturday's matchup between the Blues and Tigers will effectively be the tournament's championship game which is set to tip off at 4:00 p.m.
