Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Edges Colorado College For WHIT Classic Title

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Carly Martin scored a game-high 15 points including two key baskets down the stretch to lead the No. 23 Whitman College women's basketball team to a thrilling 54-53 win over Colorado College in the championship game of the WHIT Classic held on Saturday at the Sherwood Center.

Martin was named all-tournament along with Lindsey Drango and Korin Baker. Baker was named tournament Most Valuable Player after chipping in a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Drango added 14 points and five boards.

Audrey Baston and Zoe Tomlinson were named to the all-tournament team from the Tigers with Tomlinson posting a team-best 13 points and game-high 13 rebounds.

The Blues (7-1) led most of the way but found themselves trailing 50-47 after Healy Bledsoe's three pointer with 3:43 to play. Inside of two minutes, the Blues trailed by two before Natalie Lundberg found a streaking Martin who scored the layup while drawing a foul. She converted the three-point play to give the Blues the lead then, after a Lundberg steal, she nailed a three pointer to extend the lead to four points with 2:03 to play.

In the final seconds, Tomlinson couldn't get her jumper to go with what would have been the game winner, and Whitman walked away with the win.

The early minutes of the opening quarter saw both teams feeling each other out and working their offenses into the game. The Blues then got it going as buckets from Lundberg and Baker put their team up 11-7 with 2:53 to play. Emma Nawara responded with a three pointer but Baker got her sweeping hook to go in the final seconds to put Whitman up 13-10 by quarter's end.

Baker scored the first two baskets for the Blues as Whitman opened up a 17-10 lead 40 seconds into the second quarter. Zoe Tomlinson responded with the Tigers' first points of the period but Jordan Leith came down and nailed an elbow three to extend the lead to eight points. Drango hit from the floor with 2:19 to play but Colorado College hit the final two baskets of the period to make it a 27-23 lead for the Blues after an exciting and gritty first half.

Next up for the Blues is a three-game road trip to Tennessee. First up is Sewanee at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 17.
