Women's Volleyball Storms Past Linfield On Senior Night

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's volleyball team put a bow on the season in style, dominating Linfield en route to a 25-17, 25-19, 25-12 straight-set win over the Wildcats on Senior Night at the Sherwood Center.

The three seniors, honored with a special ceremony prior to the match, led the way for the Blues who closed the season at 7-16 overall and 6-10 in Northwest Conference play. Nicole Kelly was one kill shy of a double double with nine kills and a match-high 14 digs. Teia Magaoay recorded 31 assists and 13 digs and Kenzie Martinez added a match-high 13 kills.

Nora Myre led the Wildcats (8-15, 4-11 NWC) with seven kills and Paige Richards added a team-high 13 digs.

Whitman fired on all cylinders from the get go, hitting .294 in the opening set and recording only three errors. Martinez led the way early, scoring two aces while adding a kill to put her team up 7-2. Navi Islam-Zwart then joined Martinez in the attack. Both recorded a pair of kills as part of a 6-0 run to put the Blues up 18-9 and pull away for the win.

The momentum stayed with the Blues to open set two. Martinez had three kills and Islam-Zwart added two more along with a block to put their team up 10-4. Back-to-back kills from Myre whittled the lead to two, but the Blues responded with a 5-1 run to go up 16-9. Linfield hung around but never made a dent in Whitman's lead who pulled away for the two-lead.

The final set saw Whitman deliver its most lopsided set win of the season. Whitman again jumped out to a commanding lead, one that swelled to 14-6 after a Kelly kill and service ace. Up five points, Whitman closed the set on a 9-1 run kickstarted by four straight points from kills, two coming from Islam-Zwart. Back-to-back kills from Kelly and Martinez completed the sweep.
