RICHARDSON, Texas - The Whitman College golf teams teed off on the opening day of the Texas Cup with some fine performances on Sunday at the Sherrill Park Golf Course. The men closed the opening round in second place with the women's squad tied for sixth.

On the men's side, Ben Sweet led the Blues with his lowest collegiate round, an even par 72 to finish the day tied for third individually. Sweet carded five birdies on the day and was key to keeping the Blues only two strokes back of UT Dallas on the team leaderboard.

Close behind Sweet were Tom Hoyne who carded an opening round 74 and Eshan Singh with a 75.

The women's side will certainly feature a fierce battle on Monday's final round. The Blues are in a log jam of four teams within three shots of each other and will vie for fifth place. Led by Cindy Luo's 81, Whitman shot a +66, 364 which is tied with East Texas Baptist, two shots behind the University of Dallas and one ahead of Millikin University.

Sixth-ranked UT Dallas leads the field with a 309 followed by #20 Trinity University. Lou's 81 left her just outside the Top 10, tied for 11th place.

The Cup concludes on Monday with the final 18 holes and is set for an 8:30 a.m. CT (6:30 a.m. PT) shotgun start.
