WOODBURN, Ore. - The Whitman College golf teams took on the field at the 2023 Northwest Conference Championship, both closing Day 1 in excellent position in the overall standings.

Highlighting the excellent team and individual performances was a men's squad who closed the day at the top of the team leaderboard and will look to claim a Northwest Conference title for the first time since 1986. The Blues currently sit one stroke better (291, +3) than second place Willamette (292, +4).

Pacing the men's team was Tom Hoyne who closed Day 1 in third place on the individual leaderboard. Hoyne fired a one under 71 only two strokes back of leader Brenden Borck of George Fox. Parker Krovisky and Alexander Knox also closed the day with top 10 finishes. Krovisky shot an even par with Knox carding a two over 74.

Cindy Luo and Katya Kurkoski led the way for the women's squad who finished Day 1 in a tie for third. George Fox is currently in firm control at the top of the leaderboard with the Blues even with Pacific Lutheran.

Luo closed the day tied for sixth overall after carding a nine over 81. Kurkoski finished two strokes behind her just outside the top 10 in a tie for 12th.

The Championships conclude on Sunday with the women's squad looking to climb the leaderboard and the men's team eying both a NWC Championship and Conference title.
