Blues Swept By CLU On Senior Day

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - On Senior Day and the final day of the Bud Kight Memorial Series, the Whitman College baseball team lost both ends of a double header to Cal Lutheran on Saturday to close the regular season. CLU won the opener 10-6 then completed the sweep with a 6-3 win in the nightcap.

Prior to game one, the Blues honores their eight seniors for their contributions to Whitman baseball.

The opener saw Whitman rally from four runs down, but Cal Lu provide a late-inning answer to win going away. Benjamin Seashore-Hobson was tagged with the loss in two and one-third innings of relief work, and Milan Bugarin notched the win for the Kingsmen after tossing one and one-third innings of scoreless relief.

The Kingsmen stuck first with a run in their first at bats. Sean Blandino (3 H, 3 R, 1 RBI) scored the game's first run then Brendan Durfee (1 R, 2 RBI) scampered home after a Conaway wild pitch skidded to the back stop.

The Blues got half of it back in the bottom half of the first. Ben Parker (2 H, 2 R, 2 RBI) stole second after getting on base on a hit by pitch. Garrett Runyan (1 H, 1 RBI) then drove in Parker with a base hit to make it a 2-1 game through the first inning.

Cal Lu quickly responded. Conaway issued a base on balls to Max Heverly before Sebastian Smith (2 H, 2 R, 2 RBI) belted a homerun over the left field fence to increase his team's lead. CLU added to its lead headlined by a Smith two-run homer, but Parker got a bit of it back with a solo homerun in the bottom of the third.

Down by four runs, the Blues rallied to tie the game in the sixth inning. Five straight Blues reached base safely with Michael Doyle, Beck Maguire and Parker all delivering RBI hits to square up the scoreline.

After a scoreless seventh, the Kingsmen pulled away with three runs in the eighth and a solo homerun by Blandino.

Game two featured an impressive performance by Kingsmen pitcher John Frazier who allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts in seven and one-third innings. His only charged run came after he exited the game with one out in the eighth inning.

While the Blues were having a tough time just reaching base, CLU scored five runs over the first three innings to take an early, but solid, lead. Durfee got the Kingsmen going with a two-run base knock in the first inning. Up by three runs heading to the third, Kyle Reuser tripled to open the inning then scored to help CLU take a 5-0 lead through the first two and a half innings.

Frazier continued to handle the Whitman order but Dustin Lennon-Jones, inserted out of the bullpen with one out in the fourth inning, did the same to CLU. He allowed two hits over four scoreless innings while striking out three Kingsmen hitters and kept the Blues in the game.

The move paid dividends as Parker got the Blues back in it with one swing of the bat. The Blues put runners at the corners to force a pitching change, and Parker ripped a shot over the left centerfield fence to slice the lead in half and make it a 6-3 ball game.

The would be the remaining runs of the game however as Whitman went down in order in the ninth.
