WALLA WALLA, Wash. -
Edwin Romero opened the scoring in the first half,
Christian Gomez put home the game winner in the second and the Whitman College men's soccer team took down Pacific (Ore.) in the team's inaugural game at James Hayner Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues (2-5-1, 2-2 NWC) got on the board early with Romero's goal in the 15th minute. Lucas McAllister and Zachary Stonier both assisted on the play, combining to find Romero on the left side of the goal where he finished past Connor Barres in net for the Boxers.
The Blues continued to have the lionshare of the chances, but it were the Boxers who leveled the scoreline just seconds before halftime. Inside of one minute to play, Aidan Heflin found Evan Bleyer who beat Bernie Jones to make it a 1-1 game at the break.
Gomez scored his game winner in the 59th minute with Stonier again serving the role of facilitator. Stonier served a ball from the left flank through the Pacific defense to Gomez who finished top shelf.
Both keepers had solid outings in their respective nets. Jones posted six saves including two quality ones late in the game, also coming off his line on a corner to box the ball to safety. Barres recorded four saves for the Boxers.Â
The Blues are back on the road next weekend at Linfield and Willamette for more NWC action.Â
