Women's Volleyball Falls To UPS

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Kenzie Martinez drilled a match-high 10 kills, Jackie Zapanta added 13 digs but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the University of Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 25-17, 25-12, 25-21.

Lola Folk had a more than efficient night for the Blues (3-10, 2-4 NWC), adding six kills and committing only one error for a .385 attack percentage. For Loggers (11-3, 4-2 NWC), a host of players contributed to the solid hitting evening led by Lauren Ly's six kills.

The opening set saw a tight contest until UPS pulled away midway through. Folk's kill helped the Blues to an early two-point lead, then another maintained the same lead at 9-7. The Loggers then ran off three straight points highlighted by back-to-back kills from Katelyn Chekian. Folk evened the score with another kill and the two teams continued to trade points. UPS would take control, reeling off eight straight points to go up 21-12 and cruise to the win.

The Loggers dominated set two en route to a commanding two-set lead. UPS led early at 12-4, but a mini 4-0 run gave the Blues life. Martinez delivered a kill then got in on a block with Lilli Thompson to cut into the lead. The Loggers re-took control and, on the heels of four straight service aces late in the set, pulled away to go up two sets.

Whitman came out swinging in set three but ultimately it were the Loggers who were able to bring it home and complete the sweep. UPS opened up a four-point lead midway through the set but couldn't shake the pesky Blues. A pair Thompson kills made it a 17-14 game, but UPS responded with three quick points to extend to a six-point lead. The Blues rallied with a 5-1 run on the heels of a double block from Thompson and Folk, and later a Martinez kill brought the score to 22-21. But UPS would run off three straight points to close out the match.

Next up for the Blues is a midweek contest at Whitworth set for Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 6:00 p.m.
