Men's Basketball Takes Down Puget Sound

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Ali Efe Isik led a well-balanced scoring effort with a team-high 16 points to pace the Whitman College men's basketball team to a comfortable 84-68 win over the University of Puget sound in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center.

Jai Deshpande added 16 points and five rebounds and Jander Cline chipped in 13 points and six rebounds for the Blues (11-5, 5-2 NWC) who doubled up the Loggers in fast break points (20-10). Whitman was also aided by a plus-12 rebound advantage leading to 10 second chance points.

Dezman Baker scored a game-high 18 points for UPS (8-8, 4-3 NWC) and Zane Miller contributed 12 points off the bench.

The first half saw UPS lead early but Whitman hold a slim advantage for much of the half. Ian Cook hit from the floor and Miller nailed a three pointer on the break to put the Loggers up 14-10. Efe Isik, who hit all 12 of his free throws, then sparked a quick 7-0 run with a jumper followed by a Deshpande three pointer and Whitman never trailed again.

The momentum continued as Grant Hunt and Cline both hit from the floor to extend the lead to five points. UPS remained in the hunt though and managed to tie the score after Liam Ruttledge sank a jumper on a Logger break to make it a 27-27 game. The Blues caught fire down the stretch though as Cline scored and Alex Pape nailed a three pointer as time expired to give Whitman a double digit lead heading into halftime.

Whitman found its groove in the second half. Isaiah Amato pushed the lead to 11 points with a three ball, then later Gabe Latkovich heated up in the post, scoring a pair of buckets to balloon the lead to 17 points with 12:24 to play.

Deshpande's hoop with 9:19 remaining put his team up 23 points and the Blues coasted to the win.

The Blues return to action on Sunday, Jan. 21 against Pacific Lutheran. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 4:00 p.m.
