Men's Basketball Takes Down PLU

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Ali Efe Isik scored a game-high 23 points on an efficient 8-11 shooting and the Whitman College men's basketball team took down Pacific Lutheran 82-68 in Northwest Conference action on Sunday evening at the Sherwood Center.

Jai Deshpande and Isaiah Amato both added 13 points for the Blues (12-5, 6-2 NWC) who shot a scorching 57% in the second half to pull away.

Sam Noland led the Lutes (10-7, 3-5 NWC) with 17 points and a game-high six rebounds.

The Blues won comfortably but it was tough sledding for both teams in the early going. Whitman did not get their first bucket until Deshpande sank a three pointer with 15:48 to play in the first half. Both teams finally got their offenses going as Gabe Latkovich hit back-to-back layups to put the Blues up 13-10 heading toward the midpoint of the half.

Whitman then took control in the later stages of the period as a 9-2 run put the Blues ahead 22-13. The lead moved into double digits as Deshpande nailed a three pointer before Latkovich scored in the post to put Whitman up 28-16 with 5:01 to play in the half. Pape's three pointer extended the lead to 15 before heading to the break leading 35-24.

Whitman never let the lead fall into single digits in the second half in cruising to the win. Efe Isik converted an and-one three point play to put the Blues up 12 points, and, later, Amato drained a three pointer to make it a 61-40 score with just over 10 minutes to play.

Whitman returns to the road next weekend for more Northwest Conference action, taking on Willamette on Friday and Pacific on Saturday.
