Baker Drops Career-High 31 Points, Women's Basketball Tops Whitworth

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Korin Baker delivered a career-high 31 points to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds and the Whitman College women's basketball team returned to form to take down Whitworth 59-46 in Northwest Conference action on Tuesday night at the Sherwood Center.

Baker's presence was felt all game as she shot 13-22 from the field with four of her boards coming on the offensive glass. Carly Martin and Lindsay Drango struggled from the field but chipped in nine and six points, respectively, to help the Blues to the double digit win.

While Baker provided the offense, the team shut the Bucs down on the defensive side of the ball. Whitworth shot under 30% for the game and only 18% in the fourth quarter when the Blues pulled away. Emma Maxwell led Whitworth with 12 points off the bench and Kimberly Dewey and Alyssa Fitzgerald both chipped in nine points.

The Blues led early after back-to-back buckets from Baker gave her team a two-point lead. Christiane Carlisle later connected from three to put Whitman up 9-5 with 6:08 to play in the quarter. The Blues kept it rolling and extended the lead to eight points after Emmie Ogden's layup capped an 8-0 run to help Whitman take a 17-11 lead into the second period.

The teams matched wits and played each other even in the second quarter. Dewey connected on a three pointer early in the period, but Baker later scored at the hoop to put the Blues up 25-16 with 5:54 to play until halftime. The offense slowed in the back half of the quarter as Whitman took a 27-21 lead into the break.

The game tightened up in the third quarter and even saw the Bucs take their first lead since the early moments of the game, but the Blues took off in the final 10 minutes to win going away. Baker heated up, scoring back-to-back buckets to put Whitman up 10 points, then all but sealed the win with another hoop to make it a 57-43 game with 2:04 to play.

The Blues return to the court this Friday, Feb. 2 against Lewis & Clark. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 6:00 p.m.
