Men's Soccer Falls To Pacific Lutheran

TACOMA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's soccer team and Pacific Lutheran squared off in a battle for Northwest Conference supremacy, but the Lutes won by a large margin in a 7-0 win over the Blues on Saturday afternoon at East Field.

Whitman (8-2-1, 5-1-1 NWC) and PLU (7-1-3, 5-0-2 NWC) entered the match as the lone undefeated teams in the conference and with the Blues at the top of the league table. The result saw the Lutes leapfrog the Blues in the standings with one game remaining in the first round.

PLU all but sealed the win after scoring four goals by halftime. Craig Johnson had his hand in five of the seven goals, netting three and assisting on two others. Despite the loss, Whitman registered more shots than the Lutes, but it was PLU who were more than opportunistic in scoring seven.

Lucas Haigh and Niclas Isensee each played a half for the Blues and recorded a combined three saves. Gio Aguilar-Gutierrez and Nicholas Gaston combined for the shutout for the Lutes.

Whitman will look to get back on track when it closes the first round on Sunday against Puget Sound. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
