Women's Soccer Edges Pacific, 2-1

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The Whitman College women's soccer team rallied from a goal down, scoring just before halftime and then the gamewinner in the 83rd minute to top Pacific 2-1 in Northwest Conference action on Sunday at Hanson Stadium.

"I'm so proud of this team," said Whitman coach Michelle Voiland. "They played really well from the start. We got unlucky on the penalty and managed to even the score right before half. The second half was outstanding.  Such an exciting half and excellent goal for the win.  Lots of players stepped up today and it was a fantastic team effort.

Pacific's goal came in the 33rd minute after a Whitman defender committed a foul just inside the top of the penalty area to earn a penalty kick. Mirella Garcia converted the spotkick and put the Boxers up.

The Blues leveled the score with only five seconds remaining in the first half. Leah Barnes played a ball back to Katherine Sand who had ranged just across midfield. With time running out, she served a long ball into the box that, after a scramble, found Voilet Holm who scored through a crowd and sent the game into the break tied 1-1.

The game seemed headed toward a draw but Virginia Hunt broke the tie with the apparent gamewinner inside of 10 minutes to play. Ellie Cortes-Muniz headed a service into the box which found Hunt who had made a diagonal run from the left side. She poked the ball over the head of Boxer keeper Kylie Pascual who had come off her line in an attempt to beat Hunt to the ball.

Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky and Seanee Still split time in net for the Blues and made a combined two saves. Pascual posted three saves for the Boxers.

Next up for the Blues is a midweek home match against rival Whitworth. The two teams will square off this Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
