Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Tops Linfield 1-0

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Virginia Hunt's first-half goal was all the scoring needed as the Whitman College women's soccer team took down Linfield with a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon in Northwest Conference action at James Hayner Field.

"Another great performance by the team," said coach Michelle Voiland. "The players had to dig deep today and showed a tremendous amount of grit. We scored a fantastic goal and were excellent at making sure to finish the game with a victory. We will enjoy our day off and Tuesday start our preparation for Lewis and Clark and Willamette."

Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky earned the start and Seanee Still played the second half as the two combined for the shutout. Alexa Fritz played a full 90 minutes in net for the Wildcats.

The Blues scored the game's lone goal with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Ellie Cortes-Muniz switched play inside the Wildcat half and found Anika Patel on the right flank. Patel served a ball inside the box to a streaking Virginia Hunt who bodied the cross in front and past Fritz. She then scored the empty netter to put the Blues up.

The lionshare of the possession had been and continued to be in favor of the Blues with two shots midway through the second half nearly finding the back of the net. Kavita Getchell's shot from a bi-line service was stuffed right in front of the goal, and Hunt nearly scored her second after stealing the ball at the top of the box but her shot was handled easily by Fritz.

Hunt provided the gamewinner but also the game saver. In the later stages of the match, Jocelyn Jacobs delivered a well struck shot headed to the far post, but Hunt deflected the ball away with her head to keep the scoresheet clean and ultimately preserve the win.

The Blues are in action next when they visit Lewis & Clark on Saturday, Nov. 2. Kickoff is slated for 2:45 p.m.
