WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's soccer team showcased a dominance not seen in over a decade, beating Lewis & Clark 6-0 on Sunday afternoon in Northwest Conference action at James Hayner Field.
"What an incredible performance today," said head coach
Michelle Voiland. "The team came out on the front foot and were determined to put the ball in the back of the net. Such a great team effort and excellent way to finish off the weekend."
The onslaught of goals were done by five different players with Leah Barnes leading the way with two goals and two assists. Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky and Seanee Still combined for the shutout for the Blues (6-3-1, 3-2-1 NWC) who moved above .500 in their conference record.
Whitman led 2-0 at halftime but an early string of goals in the second half put the game completely out of reach. The Blues scored three goals in the span of just over six minutes beginning with Barnes scoring the first of her two goals less than two minutes into the half.
Just over two minutes later Barnes became the facilitator after finding Virginia Hunt who scored past Pioneer keeper Anna Ingadottir. Whitman extended its lead to five goals after being issued a penalty kick off a Lewis & Clark handball in the penalty box. Barnes converted the spot kick and the route was on.
For good measure, the Blues scored their sixth goal not long after Barnes, who had a hand in all four second-half goals, combined with Emma Foley on a goal from Katherine Sand.
Whitman heads to Tacoma next weekend with matches against Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound.
