Women's Soccer Edged On The Road At PLU

TACOMA, Wash. The Whitman College women's soccer team faced arguably its toughest Northwest Conference test in Pacific Lutheran and nearly pulled out a result, but came up short to the Lutes 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at East Field.

"That was such a battle," said head coach Michell Voiland. "The players left it all on the field. We will regroup and take it to Puget Sound tomorrow."

Hannah Cecil's penalty kick goal midway through the second half proved to be the lone one and game winner. The Lutes (7-1-3, 6-0-1 NWC) earned a corner kick which was cleared off the line by Leah Barnes to PLU's left flank. Kayden Hulquist collected the loose ball and beat her Whitman (6-4-1, 3-3-1 NWC) defender into the penalty box. She was dragged down just before laying a service across the goal mouth. Cecil converted the spot kick past Seanee Still in net for the Blues.

PLU had the lionshare of chances in the match, outshooting Whitman 11-2 and earning a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky played the first half in goal for the Blues with Still inserted at halftime. Abby Winkler played a full 90 minutes in earning the shutout for the Lutes.

Whitman will look to finish the first round on a winning note on Sunday against Puget Sound. Kickoff is set for 2:45 p.m.
