Men's Basketball Falls To North Central At the Buzzer

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Ali Efe Isik put up a double double with team highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds but North Central College had the last word, scoring on a layup at the buzzer for a 73-72 win over the Whitman College men's basketball team on Friday night at the Sherwood Center.

The Blues shot it well in a game that saw 12 lead changes and 10 ties. They shot 47% from the field and 42% from beyond the arc, the last basket coming from Gabe Latkovich's jump hook that put Whitman up 72-71 with 12 seconds to play. Terrance Moncrief spoke loudest, though, for the Cardinals, dribbling the length of the court and getting his layup to go just as time expired.

Moncrief led all scorers with 21 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for North Central who shot it well from the floor as well (46%).

The Cardinals were hot out of the gates. Early three pointers from Tyler Swierczek and Sean Molloy put North Central up 9-2 with 15:08 to play in the half. NCC extended the lead to nine points but back-to-back three pointers from Milos Sarenac and Djordje Lazarevic helped shave the lead to one approaching the midpoint of the first half.

NCC later held a four-point lead but the Whitman shots began to fall. Consecutive three pointers from Efe Isik and Grant Hunt capped a 10-0 Blues run that gave them a 23-17 with 6:55 to play. Not to be outdone, the Cardinals responded with their own run of 10 unanswered points highlighted by a pair of three pointers from Ethan Helwig. Whitman recovered but it were the Cardinals who took a 35-32 lead into the break.

The second half proved to be an exciting one as both teams battled to an exciting finish. Helwig's bucket put NCC up four early before Kyle Pape struck back with a three pointer. The Cardinals later pushed the lead to five points but the Blues went off from beyond the arc. Hunt hit a pair of three balls and Pape nailed another to help their team go up 50-47.

With just over two minutes to play, the Blues held a slim one-point lead before Tyler Disilvio hit a corner three to put NCC up two. Latkovich then hit a pair of buckets inside of one minute to play, the second moments before Moncrief's buzzer beater.

The Blues have a quick turnaround and will play Benedictine University on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
