Men's Basketball Overwhelms Benedictine

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Ali Efe Isik scored a season-high 31 points on 15-21 shooting, Milos Sarenac put up a double double with 24 points and 10 rebounds and the Whitman College men's basketball team dominated Benedictine University 91-71 on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center.

The result was a welcomed one for the Blues (2-1) who suffered a crushing defeat one day earlier. Alex Pape stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, a game-high eight assists and four rebounds. Isaiah Amato added 13 points and five assists for the Blues who shot a scorching 50% from the field.

Tanner Resch led four players in double scoring for the Eagles with 16 points. Pat Mayfield added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Despite the blowout, it was the Eagles who held the lead for a good portion of the first half. They led by as many as 10 points after back-to-back three pointers from Mayfield and Ryan Sammons put them up 19-9 with 11:45 to play in the half.

Whitman rallied as Jacob Fotu drained a three pointer to cut the lead to 19-18, but Benedictine regained the momentum and went up 30-22 with 5:25 to play. However, the rest of the half belonged to the Blues who closed on a 23-6 run and took a nine-point lead into the break. Whitman stepped up the pressure while Efe Isik and Sarenac took over offensively.

The Blues kept their foot on the pedal as they returned from the locker room. Buckets by both Efe Isik and Pape extended the lead to 15 points, then Sarenac drilled a three pointer to make it a 60-41 ball game with 15:27 to play. The lead was near 20 points the rest of the way and finished with a 20-point margin.

The Blues are next in action at the UC Santa Cruz Classic and will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps next Saturday, Nov. 23 and UCSC the following day.
