Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Blows Past Regals, Remains Undefeated

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Korin Baker led all scorers with 22 points, Lindsay Drango added 16 more and the Whitman College women's basketball team delivered another dominant win with a 73-50 trouncing of Cal Lutheran on Saturday afternoon at the UCSC Thanksgiving Classic.

The win was the sixth 20-plus point margin of victory for the Blues (7-0) who closed the week with back-to-back wins at the Classic, the first coming on Friday against the University of La Verne where they dropped a season high 94 points.

Christiane Carlisle and Baker both corralled a game-high eight rebounds with Carlisle chipping in eight points and Carly Martin adding 12 points and a game-high seven assists. Whitman certainly had the better shooting night but it was its dominance on the boards that told the tale. The Blues were plus-13 in rebounds which included 14 offensive rebounds.

Alline Ballard led the Regals with 12 points and seven rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Baker and Drango were off and running for the Blues from the opening tip. They accounted for each of Whitman's first 10 points which helped the team to a six-point lead with 4:50 to play. Martin then got in on the action, drilling a three-pointer to put the Blues ahead 13-4. Holly Morgan's jumper pushed the lead to double digits as the Blues took a 12-point lead into the second quarter.

Whitman's dominance continued into the second period as the Blues again held Cal Lu to a single digit scoring quarter. The lead quickly ballooned to 20 points when three pointers from Carlisle and Natalie Lundberg put their team up 30-10 with 6:04 to play. Carlisle hit another three pointer inside of four minutes remaining and Blues entered halftime with their largest lead of 23 points.

The lead swelled to as many as 30 points in the third quarter as the Blues closed out the victory to remain undefeated on the season.

Whitman will begin a stretch of six straight home games beginning with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday, Dec. 12. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 5:00 p.m.
