Women’s Basketball Dominates Rochester, Wins Tourney Title

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Korin Baker led all scorers with 19 points, Christiane Carlisle hit six three pointers for 18 points and the Whitman College women's basketball team routed host Rochester 74-69 in the championship game of the Chuck Resler Tournament.

Carly Martin, who named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, chipped in 16 points and handed out a game-high five assists for the Blues (2-0) who shot a scorching 50% from the floor and 47% in three pointers. The defense showed up yet again as well, holding its opponent to under 50 points for the second time and holding the Yellowjackets to only 31% shooting. Carlisle earned all-tournament honors as well.

Abby Gress led Rochester (1-1) with team highs of nine points and seven rebounds.

The Blues were firing on all cylinders from the jump, hitting four of their first six shots including three pointers from Carlisle and Carly Martin. Rochester tried to keep up but after back-to-back hoops from Baker and Martin, Whitman had opened up a 12-point lead with 2:58 to play in the first quarter.

The Blues kept their foot on the gas as the second quarter got underway. Whitman held Rochester to without a field goal for over half of the quarter while building the lead to as many as 21 points. Consecutive three balls from Carlisle and Briana Andrade put their team up 27-11 before Whitman carried their largest lead of 21 points into halftime.

Whitman gave Rochester no shot at a comeback as the lead never dipped below 20 points for the entire second half. The lead swelled to as many as 26 points on four occasions before Whitman won with a 25-point margin of victory.

The Blues play one more game on their New York trip. They will take on SUNY Geneseo on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
