Women's Soccer Plays To 1-1 Draw With UPS

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Virginia Hunt scored her team's lone goal early in the second half as the Whitman College women's soccer team played the University of Puget Sound to a hard faught 1-1 draw in Northwest Conference on Saturday afternoon at James Hayner Field.

"Today was an excellent battle," said head coach Michelle Voiland. "The team had to step up against an extremely physical Puget Sound. That tie was earned the hard way. I really appreciate how the team remained calm after going down a goal and dealing with so much physicality. This team has a never say die attitude and I knew we would get a goal back. We all were hoping for that second goal and three points. We are happy with the point. Tomorrow is a dream game. We get to host PLU and honor our seniors. It is going to be incredible."

The Loggers (8-4-7, 8-1-6 NWC) opened the scoring just under nine minutes into the game. Zoe Fowler served a ball into the penalty box to Leila Hausia-Haugen. She finished high and under the crossbar past Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky in net for the Blues (11-5-3, 8-4-3 NWC).

Though not very threatening, UPS had the lionshare of the possession in the first. The Blues did start to gain some momentum however, but the game entered halftime still with UPS holding a one-goal lead.

Whitman drew the equalizer not long after the start of the second half. Leah Barnes served a ball into the box which Hunt was able to collect and finish low and to the right to level the score.

Both teams had their fair chances to score the remainder of the game but were unable to find the back of the net. With the clock at 30 seconds and ticking away, Whitman earned a free kick which was served in by Ella Schneider, but the resulting Logger clearance closed out the game.

Pasena-Littlesky played the first half for the Blues and recorded three saves, and Seanee Still came on at halftime to keep a clean sheet. Gianna Maldonado recorded three saves in goal for the Loggers.

The Blues take the field one more time this season when they host Pacific Lutheran on Sunday for Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 1:45 p.m.
