Women's Volleyball Falls To UPS On Senior Night

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Arina Gushchina delivered a stellar performance with a match-high 14 kills to go along with 16 digs but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Puget Sound in the team's 2024 season finale on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21.

Prior to the match, the Blues honored seniors Jackie Zapanta, Quinn Pulver, Samantha Miller and Ivy Hicks for their years of service to Whitman volleyball.

Sarah Johnsen and Mackenzie Leith both had a team-high 11 kills for the Loggers who hit at a solid .260 clip.

The opening set was highlighted by a 7-0 Logger run midway through the frame. Johnsen kickstarted the run with a kill then got in a pair of blocks to keep the ball rolling. Lola Folk's block halted the momentum and started a quick run of three unanswered Whitman points, but UPS responded and went up 17-11 and closed out the set.

Set two saw the Blues dig themselves a big hole but make a late and impressive run. They staved off six set points before Leith's kill closed the door and put the Loggers up two sets.

The Blues got right back in the match after jumping on UPS early and holding on to win set three. Courtney Cline drilled two kills and got in on a block to open the set, then later Gushchina recorded back-to-back kills to put Whitman up 7-1. Cline and Pulver later keyed a 5-0 Whitman run to give their team a 16-7 lead and the Blues held off a late run by the Loggers to capture the set.

The momentum was short lived as UPS sealed the victory with a set four win.
