Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 13 Women's Basketball Takes Down UMHB

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Carly Martin led all scorers with 21 points while pulling down a season-high eight rebounds to pace the No. 13 Whitman College women's basketball team to a 64-50 win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday night at the Sherwood Center.

Korin Baker chipped in 19 points and six rebounds for the Blues who ran their record to a perfect 8-0. They recovered from a sluggish start, picking up steam in the second quarter where they outscored the Cru 21-3 and set the tone for the remainder of the game.

Jaycie Brisco led UMHB with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to stop the onslaught that took place in the second 10 minutes. Natalie Lundberg's basket was Whitman's only points through the opening five-plus minutes of the game, but the Blues recovered nicely and trailed by only three points by quarter's end.

Kick-started by a Christiane Carlisle three pointer, the Blues opened the second quarter on an 18-0 run. The stretch was halted only by Katelen Brooks' three pointer, her team's only basket of the quarter. Martin heated up in the quarter as well as she went on a personal 11-0 run capped by one of her three three pointers in the contest.

The second half saw the Blues extend the lead to 19 points in the third quarter but had trouble breaking the Cru press in the fourth. UMHB forced Whitman into 21 turnovers in the game, many coming late as the Cru cut the lead to single digits. The rally attempt would fall short as baskets by Baker and Holly Morgan in the final two minutes sealed the win.

Whitman will have a quick turnaround when they square off with another undefeated squad in Lewis-Clark State on Friday at the Sherwood Center. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
