Blues Surge Late But Fall To Cal Lu

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Jacob Fotu and Isaiah Amato both put up a team-high 17 points, but the Whitman College men's basketball team ran into a hot shooting Cal Lutheran team, falling to the Kingsman 98-87 on Sunday afternoon at the Sherwood Center.

Devon Lewis led all scorers with an impressive 43 points on 12-23 shooting including 5-9 in three pointers. Nick Anntanasio also contributed to Cal Lu's stellar scoring output with 23 points.

Despite the loss which saw Whitman trail by double digits for a good chunk of the second half, the Blues made a late surge to put the outcome in jeopardy. Matthew Verkamp's three pointer put the Kingsman ahead by 17 with 6:35 to play, but Whitman answered with a 9-0 run to bring the deficit to single digits. Amato converted an and-one three point play and Bernard Dzesi, who had six points in the run, capped the spurt with a layup to make it an 85-77 score with 4:31 to play.

Verkamp nailed a three pointer out of the Cal Lu timeout to halt the momentum as the Kingsman pulled away for the win.

Whitman struggled to get in rhythm in the first half and had to withstand a scoring spree from Lewis who dropped 36 points in the period. Alex Pape's three pointer made it a two-point game with 6:05 to play, but Cal Lu took advantage of a series of Whitman turnovers to extend the lead to double digits and enter the break up 14.

The Blues (2-5) take the court one more time before the new year with a road game at Walla Walla University on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2:00 p.m.
