Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Upended By Walla Walla U.

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Ali Efe Isik and Alex Pape both led the Blues with a team-high 22 points but it came in defeat as the Whitman College men's basketball team fell 85-81 to crosstown foe Walla Walla University on Sunday afternoon on Windemuth Court.

Soren Dalan did the work for the Wolves who were plus-10 on the boards leading to a 20-13 advantage in second-chance points. Dalan posted game highs of 26 points and 11 rebounds for the double double, and Andrew Vaughan added 19 points with Almonds Sebirokwa chipping in 13 more.

WWU came out like gangbusters at the opening tip. The Wolves connected on six of their first eight field goal attempts leading to a 14-2 run to start the game. The Blues survived the haymaker and worked themselves into the game. A Bernard Dzesi jumper followed by back-to-back Pape layups cut the lead to 19-10 with 12:30 to play.

The lead hovered around 10 points for most of the half before Whitman put together a late run to close the gap and take the lead before halftime. With the Blues down 12, Efe Isik scored at the hoop and, on the next possession, Grant Hunt found Pape who drilled a three pointer to make it a seven-point game with 5:07 to play. Kekoa Beard answered with a three pointer, but Whitman proceeded to close the half on an 18-2 run to take a 46-40 lead into halftime

Whitman returned from the break with momentum and even extended its lead to 10 points at 59-49 with 11:07 to play. The Wolves would use an 11-0 run in the later stages of the half however to reverse the tides and take control.

The Blues found the range down the stretch, though, as Efe Isik, Aidan von Buchwaldt, and Pape all hit three pointers in an attempt to close the gap, but WWU was able to hold on to the lead and complete the upset win.

With the non-conference portion of the regular season behind them, the Blues now set their sights on Northwest Conference play which gets underway on Friday, Jan. 3 against Puget Sound. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 6:00 p.m.
