Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Upended In NWC Semifinal

SALEM, Ore. - Carly Martin led with a team-high 12 points, Christiane Carlisle added 10 more but it came in a loss as the Whitman College women's basketball team fell to Pacific 58-46 in the semifinals of the NWC Tournament held at Cone Field House.

Outside of a late fourth-quarter run, the Blues were never in the game. The Boxers scored nine unanswered points to start the game and held Whitman to only two points in the first quarter. The lead swelled to as many as 21 points in the second half before the Blues closed the gap late but not enough to threaten the outcome.

Whitman now hopes the NCAA will look favorably and award the Blues an at-large bid when the field of 64 is announced on Monday.

A rough opening quarter continued into the second. Rilee Price opened the period with a three pointer and the lead swelled to 17 points with 5:32 to play until halftime. Shade Williams extended the lead to 20 points with a three pointer but the Blues started to get a few of their shots to go. Natalie Lundberg hit from three before Briana Andrade hit back-to-back jumpers to make it a 14-point game at the break.

The third quarter finally saw the arrival of Korin Baker who hit back-to-back jumpers to whittle the lead to 30-19 with 7:17 to play. The Boxers responded and pushed the lead back up to 18 points. Price's jumper then capped a 12-4 run to close the quarter and put her team up 19 heading to the final 10 minutes.

Pacific led by 20 points with 4:51 to play, but the Blues scored seven quick points and threatened to cut the lead to single digits. Baker and Martin scored and Avery Neal hit a three pointer to cut the lead to 53-40, but Pacific stemmed the tide and cruised to the win.
