Men's Tennis Drops a Pair To Open Spring Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Whitman College men's tennis team served up the 2024 spring season on Saturday but came up short in a pair of road matches in Idaho. Fielding a split squad for the day, the Blues fell at Lewis-Clark State, 6-1, and at Idaho State, 5-0.

LEWISTON, Idaho - The early match of the day saw the Blues fall behind the eight ball after getting swept in doubles play. The Whitman pair of Hanri Luo and Diego Guzman fell 6-1 at the two before Artem Manov and Charles Rush dropped their No. 2 match to Matus Rusnak and Austin Swing, 6-3 to secure the doubles point.

The Blues dropped the first three singles matches as LCSC clinched the win. Manov fell 6-4, 6-4 to Itaru Kikuchi at the one, Rusnak topped Guzman by the same score on the No. 2 court and Rush fell in straight sets to Swing for the match-clincher.

Luo earned Whitman's lone victory with his three-set win at fifth singles over Nell Rollin.

POCATELLO, Idaho - The other half of Whitman's split squad found similar challenges against Division I Idaho State. The Bengals opened the match with a clean sweep in doubles to secure the point heading to singles play. The team of Cameron Yang and Lucas Huang was the most competitive, teaming up on the No. 1 court but falling 6-3 to Victor Sklenka and Valentino De Pellegrin. 

ISU swept each singles match to clinch the win. The match clincher came on the No. 1 court when Yang fell to Sklenka 6-1, 6-3.

The most competitive singles match came at the six. After Noah Baker's scratch at the four, Gunnar Wollar moved into the lineup and pushed JW Altman to a second-set tiebreaker before falling 6-2, 7-6 (1).

Whitman closes out the weekend on Sunday versus Colorado Mesa University in a neutral site match played in Pocatello.
