The opener saw a sensational performance on the bump from Mateus Conaway (2-2). He delivered a complete-game shutout while scattering six hits and striking out a season-high 11 batters. Matoon (0-1) tossed seven innings while allowing six runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.
Conaway's dominance was more than enough for the Blues who saw excellent hitting performances from Jack Bickerton (2 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping (2 H, 1 R, 3 RBI). Garrett Runyan and Brandon Ting both recorded hits with Runyan driving home a run and Ting scoring one. Nate Korahais added a hit, a run and an RBI.
Conaway pitched to the minimum through four innings during which time Whitman scored six of its seven runs. The Blues got on the board with a run in the first after Bickerton hit a leadoff double then later scored. One inning later, both he and Mieszkowski-Lapping blasted solo homers to put Whitman up 3-0.Â
The third inning saw run-scoring doubles from both Mieszkowski-Lapping and Korahais, and a leadoff double from Ting as the Blues plated three runs to take a 6-0 lead.
Conaway took care of the rest and cruised through the Pioneer order.
