Men's Tennis Tops Whitworth In NWC Opener

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Cameron Yang won in doubles then provided the match-clincher in singles to help the Whitman College men's tennis team to a 7-2 win over Whitworth in Northwest Conference play on Saturday at the Bratton Indoor Tennis Center.

The match was the conference opener for the Blues (2-6, 1-0 NWC) who returned the favor after falling to the Bucs (1-6, 0-1 NWC) in a non-conference match last month.

After Braeden Thomas and Noah Baker opened up the match with an 8-4 win at third doubles, Charles Rush and Artem Manov fell on the No. 1 court as Whitworth evened the match. The Blues assured themselves of the lead heading to singles play, however, after Yang and Lucas Huang topped the Buc pair of Jess Weaver and Colby Cinqmars, 8-6, at the two.

Whitman won the first two matches in singles to go up 4-1, both dominant straight set wins by Manov and Huang. Yang's match-clinching win came in the only singles match to go three sets, taking down Payton Romey on the No. 1 court 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.

The Blues have a quick turnaround as they head to Lewis-Clark State College to take on the Warriors tomorrow.
