Baseball Splits Twinbill With Redlands

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team opened the Bud Kight Memorial Invitational with a doubleheader split against the University of Redlands. Redlands edged Whitman 5-4 in the opener and the Blues responded with a dominant 12-4 win in the nightcap.

Game 1
The opener saw Redlands lead early then rally late for the win. RBI hits from Jake Burgess and Ian Umscheid regained the lead for the Bulldogs in the eighth, and Whitman (19-12) was unable to tie or score the game winning run in the ninth despite having the bases loaded and only one out.

Halen Otte and Nate Korahais both had a pair of hits for the Blues with Otte doubling, scoring a run and driving in another.

For the Bulldogs, Gabriel Ceja had two hits, one run and one RBI, and Jake Burgess added a single, triple, a run and an RBI.

Julien Hernandez allowed one earned run in seven complete innings but did not factor in the decision. Bulldog starter Tyler Reiter also did not factor in the decision after pitching six complete while allowing three earned runs on 10 hits.

Redlands struck first after Will Cell doubled home a pair of runs off Hernandez in the second inning, but the Blues responded with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Brandon Ting and Otte singled to open the fourth, and Korahais reached first to load the bases with no one out. Nick Teng and AJ Romero each were able to drive home a run to tie the game.

With Julien Hernandez now settled in on the mound, Whitman tied the game one inning later. Beck Maguire took advantage of an infield miscue and scored from third to put the Blues up, then Otte doubled in a run to give Whitman a 4-2 lead.

After Redlands retook the lead with a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth, the Blues looked prime to either tie or win the game after loading the bases with one out. Ting and Otte subsequently popped and flew out to end the threat.

Game 2
The back end of the twinbill saw Whitman jump on Redlands early. After a scoreless first inning, the Blues just about put the game to bed with nine runs in the second. Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping provided the big hits of the inning. Mieszkowski-Lapping collected RBI in both his plate appearances, doubling twice with the second clearing the bases to cap the big inning.

Redlands plated a run in the fifth but the Blues responded with three of their own in the sixth to end any possibility of a rally. Jack Bickerton's two-run homer and Mateus Conaway's RBI single provided the scoring to put Whitman up 12-1.

Russell Petersen had more than enough run support on the bump. He tossed an impressive five complete innings, allowing one run on three hits with nine strikeouts.

Miles Lu struggled in his start for the Bulldogs, lasting one and one-third innings and giving up seven runs on seven hits.

The Invitational concludes on Saturday as the Blues and Bulldogs square off with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
