NEWBERG, Ore. - In a clash of the league's elite, the Whitman College men's tennis team ran into a buzzsaw at George Fox, falling mightily to the Bruins in Northwest Conference action on Sunday.
The loss was the first of the conference season for the Blues (8-12, 5-1 NWC) who likely will have to head out on the road when the NWC Tournament kicks off later this month.
The Bruins set the tone for the win after a clean sweep in doubles play. The tightest match came on the No. 2 court where the Whitman pair of Cameron Yang and Lucas Huang lost 8-7 to Lars Schmassmann and Eli Mizerski.
Singles play saw clean sweeps by the Bruins in each match. The No. 1 court again saw a tiebreaker, this time in singles but with the same results as Yang fell to Mizerski 6-1, 7-6.
The Blues close out the conference season on Saturday, April 13 at Puget Sound. Start time is set for 11:00 a.m.
