Women's Soccer Takes Down CBC In Exhibition Action

8/27/2024 9:11:00 PM

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's soccer team opened the season with an exhibition contest against Columbia Basin College, topping the Hawks with a solid 2-0 victory on Tuesday evening at Hayner Field.

The Blues scored just after kickoff then again just before halftime. While possession was even for a good portion of the game, Whitman had the lionshare of the chances on goal.

Ellie Cortes-Muniz notched the game's first goal only 48 seconds into the contest. Isabella Lucky served a ball on the floor from the bi-line that slipped through the CBC defense. Cortez-Muniz ran on to the ball and finished past Hawk keeper Samantha Groesbeck.

Leah Barnes and Lorelei Starr hooked up for Whitman's second goal with under four minutes to play in the half. Barnes found room in the center of the park and dribbled into the attacking third. She found Starr in the penalty area and kept running into the box where she received the ball back from Starr and finished far post past Groesbeck.

Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky earned the start in net for the Blues and recorded three saves before Eleanor Johnson came on to play the second half. Groesbeck finished with two saves in her 90 minutes of action.

Whitman now heads to California to open the season in earnest. First up is a match at Caltech on Friday, August 30 at 2:00 p.m.
