Valero Scores Three, Men's Soccer Wins Thriller At La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - Sawyer Valero delivered a hat trick to spearhead the Whitman College men's soccer team to an action-packed and thrilling 4-3 victory over the University of La Verne on Friday night at Ortmayer Stadium.

Two of Valero's goals came in the final 11 minutes, first being the equalizer and the second the gamewinner in the 84th minute.

The Leopards (0-4) opened the scoring when Alexander Bastidas beat Blues (2-1) keeper Niclas Isensee to put his team up early.

The equalizer came not long after as Zachary Stonier found Jacob Burrill who found the back of the net in the 18th minute. Close to halftime, Valero scored the first of his three goals when he beat Leopard starter Logan Reese to help the Blues carry a 2-1 lead into the break.

La Verne took its first lead with a pair of goals in the second half less than two minutes apart. Both assisted by Maximillian De Anda, Ruben Gonzalez tied the game in the 58th minute and Adan Villarreal scored moments later to give his team the lead.

Neither team would score for the next 20 minutes until Whitman earned itself a penalty kick in the 80th minute. Valero stepped up and converted the spot kick to tie the game. Valero's gamewinner came only four minutes later, a goal that was set up by Jacob Burrill.

Whitman will have a day off before looking to grab its second win in three games on the road trip finale. The Blues will take on Chapman this Sunday, Sept. 15 at 11:00 a.m.
