Women's Volleyball Falls To Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Whitman College women's volleyball team had hoped to conclude its Texas trip on a winning note, but came up short against a powerful Southwestern (TX) team on the final day of the SU Fall Invitational. The Blues fell in a sweep with set scores 25-12, 25-15, 25-16.

Quinn Pulver posted a team-best five kills for Whitman (1-6) who had a difficult time hitting through the Pirate block. The Blues committed only 12 errors on the afternoon but hit only .056 for the match and were doubled up in blocks 8-4.

Emily Marks paced SU (6-0) with a match-high 11 kills and Kate Spinelli added 13 digs, also a match high.

Whitman hung around in the early stages of the opening set as Courtney Cline got in on a pair of blocks to keep the deficit at only two points. SU took control from there, reeling off six unanswered points only halted by a Cline kill. The Pirates continued with several separate runs to win going away.

The opening set framed the tone for the rest of the match. Set two saw Southwestern score six of the first seven points and quickly open up a double digit lead at 13-3. Whitman did make a push, however, in the middle part of the set as kills from Lilli Thompson and Arina Gushchina keyed a 5-0 run to cut into the deficit. It wouldn't be enough though as SU regrouped and pulled away.

Set three saw SU lead from beginning to end to complete the sweep.

The Blues are next in action on Wednesday, Sept. 11, hosting Walla Walla Community College in an exhibition match at the Sherwood Center. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
