No. 8 Women's Basketball Cruises Past Willamette

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Korin Baker delivered a monster performance with 26 points and 14 rebounds, Carly Martin added 21 points and a game-high five assists and the No. 8 Whitman College women basketball overwhelmed Willamette 77-49 in a battle of Northwest Conference heavyweights on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center.

Christiane Carlisle shot 50% (4-8) in three pointers for 13 points for the Blues who shot 42% from the floor and 50% from beyond the arc. Baker, now sitting at third all-time in scoring, shot an impressive 10-14 from the field.

The opening quarter was as advertised as the two teams played to an even draw through the first 10 minutes. Carlisle had the hot hand with two three pointers in Whitman's opening three possessions. The Bearcats responded in kind when Alexis Dockter nailed a three pointer and scored at the hoop to put her team up 12-10 with 1:51 to play. Baker heated up to close the end of the quarter and sunk a trio of jumpers and leveled the score.

The Blues took some sense of control in the second quarter and used an 8-1 run midway through to take the upper hand. Peyton Gardner's jumper tied the game early, but Martin and Natalie Lundberg both got their next shots to go as Whitman went up 29-22 with 3:07 to play. Baker converted an and-one three-point play inside of a minute to go and the Blues took a five point lead into the locker room.

The second half proved to be no contest as the Blues secured their record (12-1, 4-0 NWC) as the lone unbeaten one in the Northwest Conference. Martin went on a personal 8-0 run to quickly extend the lead to double digits. She drilled a three pointer, scored at the hoop on the next possession, then nailed another three pointer moments later to put the Blues up 42-29 with 7:25 to play.

The lead swelled to as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter as the Blues won going away.

Whitman hits the road next weekend when they visit Pacific University and George Fox.
