No. 7 Blues WIn By Wide Margin Over Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. - Korin Baker poured in 27 points with nine rebounds and four blocks, Carly Martin added 19 points and the No. 7 Whitman College women's basketball team won the first meeting of the Battle of the Whits by a wide margin, 80-43 over Whitworth in Northwest Conference action on Tuesday night.

The win keeps the Blues (14-1, 7-0 NWC) unblemished in the Northwest Conference. They dominated the Bucs in the post, scoring nearly half of their points from the painted area and were plus-14 on the boards.

Ashlyn Peterson scored a team-high 14 points for the Bucs who were forced into a 27% shooting night from the floor. Mya Bair added 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Blues controlled the game from the outset and set the tone with an eight-point lead by the end of the first quarter. They blew the lid off the game in the second period, however, outscoring the Pirates by 14 to hold a commanding lead at the break. Whitman held Whitworth to a single basket through the first six minutes of the period during which time the lead ballooned to 15 points. Martin and Baker spearheaded what turned out to be an 11-2 run that put their team up 31-16 with 6:06 to play.

Martin's three pointer closed the half and gave Whitman its largest lead of the contest at 22 points. The lead never slipped below 20 points the entire second half as the Blues raced to the finish line with an exceptionally dominant fourth quarter.

The Blues return home for their next conference action, hosting Linfield on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 6:00 p.m.
