Men's Soccer Battles PLU To 1-1 Draw

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's soccer team and Pacific Lutheran, the top two and undefeated teams in the Northwest Conference, battled to a 1-1 draw on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at James Hayner Field, thrilling spectators with high-level soccer, strong possession, and chances at both ends.

Pacific Lutheran (6-3-2, 5-0-2 NWC) struck first as Misha Turchaninov put the Lutes up 1-0 in the 14th minute when he caught Whitman (7-0-2, 6-0-1) keeper Niclas Isensee moving his feet and ripping a well-placed strike to the upper far post.

Despite facing a tough PLU defense, Whitman generated numerous opportunities, unleashing 10 first-half shots, but Lutes goalkeeper Gio Aguilar-Gutierrez made seven saves to maintain the lead.

Whitman continued pressing and finally got on the scoreboard in the 51st minute when Fernando Lopez-Vega scored off a setup by Lucas McAllister, knotting the match at 1-1. Both sides refused to relent, with PLU responding with greater attacking urgency and Whitman threatening repeatedly, but neither team could break the deadlock before the final whistle.

Isensee made a spectacular near-post save with 12 minutes to play, denying what could have been a match-winner for PLU. Isensee finished with five second-half saves, while Aguilar-Gutierrez tallied 10 in total, as both keepers shone when it mattered most.

The draw keeps both teams unbeaten in conference play and the Blues still atop the league standings, underscoring their quality and setting up a tantalizing rematch down the line. The Blues close out the weekend on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. match against Puget Sound.
