Flurry of Late Goals Lifts Blues Past Loggers

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College soccer team staged a dramatic and prolific late comeback to defeat the University of Puget Sound 4-1 in Northwest Conference play on Sunday afternoon at James Hayner Field.

Led by Remy Marcks who had a goal and assist in the final flurry, the Blues scored four times in the final 17 minutes to erase a one-goal deficit in a thrilling finish on their home field.

Puget Sound took an early advantage, with Jackson Smith scoring in the 18th minute after an assist from Edgar Tamayo Gallegos. The Loggers held Whitman goalless through the first half, despite a flurry of Blues shots and strong playmaking around the box.

The tide turned late in the second half. In the 74th minute, Jude Clum-Stockton drew the teams level for Whitman goal off a service from the left flank by Marcks. Just two minutes later, Marcks found the net himself, finishing off a Lucas McAllister driven service across the goal mouth as the Blues grabbed the lead at 2-1.

Fernando Lopez-Vega made it 3-1 in the 80th minute, getting the final touch on Adrian Valencia's assist, and four minutes later, Riki Kobayashi capped the scoring on a pass from Henry Pierce. Each goal was a result of Whitman's combined attacking pressure and smooth teamwork.

Whitman outshot Puget Sound 14-5 and earned six corner kicks to the Loggers' one, controlling play especially in the final stages. The Blues keeper Niclas Isensee made three crucial saves, securing the win as the offense took over late.

With the win, Whitman improved to 8-0-4 overall and 7-0-1 in conference play to hold a strong foothold of first through the first half of the league season. Puget Sound dropped to 5-4-2 and 4-3-1.

The Blues hit the road next weekend for matches against Pacific and Willamette.
