WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In blustery, frigid conditions, the Whitman College women's soccer team suffered its first Northwest Conference loss of the season, falling 2-1 to Pacific Lutheran on Saturday at James Hayner Field. Both PLU goals came directly off corner kicks as the Lutes remained undefeated and atop the conference standings, while Whitman dropped to 2-1-4 in NWC play, and 3-2-6 overall.
"The team played an excellent game today," said head coach
Michelle Voiland. "We created some great opportunities and had the chances to win. The difference was PLU executing on their corners which is their bread and butter. Our women fought to the end and will bounce back tomorrow against UPS."
PLU wasted no time capitalizing on their first set piece. In just the third minute, following the match's opening corner kick, Liv Olson found the back of the net after receiving an assist from Kiana Gutierrez, giving the visiting Lutes an early lead.Â
Whitman responded with sustained pressure, and after several key stops by PLU goalkeeper Abby Winkler, the Blues drew even. In the 20th minute, Gracia Larson tallied her third goal of the season, finishing unassisted to bring Whitman level. The remainder of the half was closely contested, with both teams generating chances. Winkler registered four saves in the opening period as Whitman outshot PLU, 8-3.
After halftime substitutions, both squads pressed for a breakthrough, but defense and goalkeeping defined much of the early action. Ella Johnson led Whitman's backline and contributed a match-high six shot attempts.Â
The match turned midway through the second half, again from a PLU corner. In the 70th minute, Olson converted her second goal of the afternoon, this time assisted by Bella Hanna, giving the Lutes a 2-1 advantage they would not relinquish. Despite multiple attacking surges from the Blues and five second-half corners, Winkler's steady play in net and the Lutes' defensive organization held firm.
Eleanor Johnson and Seanee Still both played a half for Whitman in net, each registering a save and allowing a goal.
The Blues return to action on Sunday against Puget Sound who currently shares the top spot in the conference with the aforementioned Lutes. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
