Blues Turn In Impressive Performances At ITA Cup

ROME, Ga. - The Whitman College tennis teams set three total players to the ITA Cup held at the Rome Tennis Center and each delivered outstanding overall performances over the course of three matches.

Stage, in his first ITA Cup as a member of the Blues, won two of his three matches with his victories coming against top caliber opponents. He fell in his opening match but turned in two impressive wins in the following days.

On Friday he took down Gustavus Adolphus's Dominik Knutson 6-1, 6-0 then rallied from a set down to oust Drew Goldman 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 to close the tournament. Goldman entered the Cup ranked second in the west region and finished last spring ranked 13th nationally.

Artem Manov and Charlies also competed, teaming up for the men's open doubles competition. The duo fell short in each of their three matches but all in very competitive fashion. Most notable was this past Friday when they pushed the University of Chicago to a deciding set but ultimately lost 7-4, 6-4, 14-12

On the women's side, Nana Vang and Sascha Wells shined brightly in their performances. Vang qualified to compete in both singles and doubles, with Wells her partner in crime in the doubles competition.

In singles, Vang dropped her opening two matches, one to the reigning Northwest Regional Rookie of the Year, but closed the Cup with a dominant 6-0, 6-4 win over Ginevra Muratori.

Vang and Wells lost each of their three doubles matches but showcased some of the best tennis of their careers. Most notable was their final match against Skidmore where they had every opportunity to win but came up short 7-6 (5), 6-1, 10-2

With fall play complete, both the Whitman tennis squads will return to the court after the new year for their championship seasons.
