Women's Soccer Comes Up Short At Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The Whitman College women's soccer team fell to Pacific 2-1 in a hard-fought Northwest Conference battle at Hanson Stadium. The Blues, who entered the game undefeated through their first six league contests, have struggled recently with three losses in four matches.

Pacific (4-5-6, 3-3-6 NWC) jumped out to an early lead with a goal by Mirella Garcia at 6:30 of the first half, assisted by Gwendolyn Saing. Whitman (3-4-7, 2-3-5 NWC) responded midway through the half when Leah Barnes notched an unassisted goal in the 13th minute to even the score at 1-1.

However, Pacific regained the advantage in the 21st minute on a solo goal by Rissalyn Hara, which ultimately stood as the game-winner.

Whitman's defense fought hard, and the second half shutout performance in goal by Eleanor Johnson was a notable bright spot. Johnson came on at halftime, replacing Seanee Still, and did not allow any goals in the final 45 minutes.

The Blues totaled 11 shots on goal, but Pacific goalkeeper Kylie Pascual made important saves to preserve the lead. Whitman controlled much of the second half possession but was unable to find the equalizer.

Whitman will have a quick turnaround when it travels to Spokane to play Whitworth on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 2:30 p.m.
