Lash Scores Late, Blues Tie Whitworth 1-1

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitman College women's soccer team battled to a dramatic 1-1 draw against Whitworth University in the Battle of the Whits in Northwest Conference action on Wednesday night at James Hayner Field

From the opening whistle, both teams locked in a tactical contest, with Whitman (3-4-8, 2-3-6 NWC) controlling possession but struggling to break the Pirates' defensive lines. The opening half was characterized by persistent midfield battles and a pair of saves by Whitman keeper Eleanor Johnson, limiting Whitworth's opportunities. Whitman managed seven shots in the first half, but Pirate (1-6-7, 1-5-5 NWC) goalkeeper Paige Broadrick kept the score level, turning away three on-target efforts.​

After halftime, Whitman upped their tempo and fired 11 second-half shots in their quest to seize three points. Their attacking pressure eventually paid off in the 75th minute, when Emoree Lash seized a turnover and dribbled to the top of the box before curling a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.

The lead was short-lived, though. Just under a minute later, Whitworth responded with a quick equalizer. Faith Shaw, set up by Lily Parker, took advantage of a well-placed cross, juked inside from the right side and threaded a low shot into the corner knot the score

Whitman's Leah Barnes led all shooters with seven attempts, constantly threatening the Whitworth net. Goalkeeper Seanee Still stood tall in the later stages, making several critical second-half saves to preserve the tie for the Blues. 

The Blues return to action on Sunday against Linfield. Kickoff at Hayner Field is set for 12:00 p.m.
