Late Goal Gives Blues 1-1 Draw at Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. – Ella Johnson's late goal helped the Whitman College women's soccer team rallied late to remain unbeaten in Northwest Conference play, drawing 1-1 with Lewis & Clark on Friday night at Griswold Stadium.

The Pioneers seized momentum early, grabbing a lead in just the eighth minute as Mischa Vanek converted a setup from Riley Yip for her second goal of the season. Whitman responded with poise, generating steady pressure throughout the match. Despite trailing at halftime, the Blues continued to build chances, outshooting the hosts 18-8 and earning a decisive 10-1 edge in corner kicks.

As the clock wound down, Whitman's persistence was rewarded. In the 78th minute, Ella Johnson broke through the Pioneer defense, scoring her second goal of the season off an assist from Emoree Lash to bring the Blues level. That goal capped a second-half push that featured 11 Whitman shots and constant attacking presence in the Lewis & Clark end.

Defensively, Whitman clamped down after the early Pioneer tally. Goalkeepers Eleanor Johnson and Seanee Still faced just two shots on target all evening, combining for one save while the Blues back line limited dangerous opportunities.

The draw lifts Whitman to 3-1-5 overall and 2-0-3 in the conference, and the Blues remain undefeated in NWC play. Lewis & Clark moves to 1-6-2 and 1-3-1 in conference action.

The Blues will have a day off on this NWC trip and will resume action on Sunday at George Fox. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m.
